Right-sizing resources is the process of matching cloud instance types and sizes to your actual workload at the lowest possible cost. Tools judge the level of workload based on recent usage: AWS Compute Optimizer, for instance, considers the most recent 14 days’ utilization statistics by default. The point is to spend exactly how much you should while also only using the resources that you require.

The consequences of not right-sizing resources affect both what you spend and how workloads perform:

• Underprovisioning: You also need to ensure that you don’t have too little capacity so as not to hurt your performance and customer experience.

To optimize the cost of cloud resources while maintaining performance, focus on four aspects of cloud cost optimization:

• Continuous Monitoring: Assess your resource utilization (CPU, memory, storage, and network use at idle, average, and peak) and increase/decrease as required.

How often to right-size resources depends on different factors, such as workload nature and variability. Adjust and monitor more often if your workload changes frequently. On the other hand, you might need periodic reviews if you roughly know what your workload is.

Regardless of what you do, you should define a specific review window (e.g., monthly). During these reviews, assess to see the extent to which your resources are aligned. Doing this is necessary if you want to maintain performance while simultaneously optimizing the costs of your cloud.
