What is a MID (Merchant Identification Number)?
What is a MID (Merchant Identification Number)?
A MID, or merchant ID, is the unique number (or string) a merchant receives at the acquisition stage as a key element of the payment processing relationship. It enables an acquirer or processor to find a specific merchant account in systems associated with credit card transactions, payment processing, and business accounts.
What does a MID look like?
MIDs can vary in their length and format. Its structure will be dependent on the acquiring institution, the payment gateway, and the payment solution setup.
MID validation typically requires consideration beyond just its length. If a system requires a specific format, confirm the expected identifier directly with the acquirer or payment provider that issued it.
How does a MID differ from an MCC, TID, and EIN?
These identifiers may appear in the same payment or business workflows, but they describe different things.
| Identifier | What It Represents |
| MID | A merchant account or acquiring relationship within a payment processing setup |
| MCC (Merchant Category Code) | The merchant’s primary business category for card-network purposes |
| TID (Terminal ID) | A terminal or acceptance endpoint within the payment setup |
| EIN (Employer Identification Number) | A US federal tax identifier issued by the IRS |
Can a business have more than one MID?
Yes, having separate business units or running different acquirers, processors, processing setups, currencies, and locations can lead a business to have several MIDs. They might observe the card acquirer ID or card acceptor ID within the payment records. A Card Acceptor Identification (CAID) identifies the merchant accepting the card in a transaction, which, from a technical perspective, is different, although in some instances where the processing environment allows, MID and CAID could be represented by the same numbers/values.
Who assigns a MID?
When the merchant and the acquirer enter into a direct agreement at the acquirer’s side to open up an account, the merchant ID, a key component of the account details, is one of the elements generated through that setup. Since the steps taken, the acquiring institution, payment processor, and the payment method will differ from merchant to merchant, this process remains specific to the merchant’s setup. A merchant may receive its own MID through direct engagement with the acquirer, if that is the acquirer’s practice in the jurisdiction.
Confirm the payment model and contractual responsibilities separately from the MID setup. Holding a MID, sub-merchant ID, or similar identifier does not by itself determine responsibility for tax, compliance, disputes, or chargebacks.
How does a MID work with a Merchant of Record?
Under the MoR arrangement, or when a merchant account owner engages a third party (the sales platform) who sells goods/services to a customer on its behalf, the legal sale is attributed to the MoR; the latter is also the one dealing with the payment processing aspects such as the acquiring and the settlement. Should a SaaS or software company conduct sales through a 记账商(MOR), it typically does not hold responsibility for payment acquiring and the corresponding Merchant ID. Everything regarding the merchant relationship, payment processing, settlement, and related services is taken care of per the MoR arrangement.
Where can a business find its MID?
Where to find a MID will depend upon the acquirer or the 支付网关 used. A merchant may find it through 商户账户 documentation, the dashboard of the payment gateway, settlement files, or in onboarding records. Providers use different labels for such numbers, like Merchant ID, merchant number, or anything that is close to these in nature. When configuring payment processing or addressing account concerns, it is advisable to confirm the specific field rather than assuming identical terms denote identical values.
结论
MID means recognizing the merchant account or acquiring relationship in a particular setup involving cards and not mixing up tax IDs, category codes, or identifiers associated with terminals. If the acquiring relationship is compared between processing arrangements (direct processing with a bank, processing facilitated by a third party like a payment facilitator, and MoR arrangements), it is critical to realize where the MID belongs in the “bigger picture.”
